What to think about before you book

Anything involving a gas boiler, gas hob or gas pipework must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ask for the registration and check it on the Gas Safe Register — plumbing alone does not cover gas.

Call-out and hourly rates

For urgent work, confirm the call-out charge, the minimum period covered, the hourly rate afterwards and whether parts are extra before anyone is booked.

Parts and fittings

Ask whether the price includes parts, and whether a like-for-like replacement is possible — older bathroom suites and radiators are not always available in matching sizes.

Before someone arrives

For an active leak, turn the water off at the stop tap, catch what you can and turn off electrics near the water. Photograph the damage if you may need to claim.

Access to pipework

Say whether pipes are buried, boxed in or under a tiled floor. Access affects both the price and how much making good is needed afterwards.
